In 1913, he traveled to England where he was received by the Queen and King and became their friend. His paintings then fell under the influence of Joseph Mallord William Turner's mists.

Mobilized during World War I, he served in the Navy. In 1918, he was a member of an official mission to the United States. On his return to France he founded, with the help of the Minister of the Marine Georges Leygues, the Salon des Paintres de la Marine and the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts de la mer.

Gillot was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1921. He died in 1925 before being able to attend the organization of the first Salon he created.
