McDowell taught in the Middle East for eight years and worked with archaeological research teams taking part in digs in North Africa, Turkey, Cyprus and Jordan. His paintings were heavily influenced by early Greek and Byzantine art.

McDowell was made a member of the Royal Institute of Painters and Water Colours in 1985, joining the Institute’s Council in 1991. He won several awards for his art and held exhibitions all over the globe. His work is included in the collections of HRH King Charles, Hertfordshire County Council Arts Collection, and Reuters.

McDowell was headmaster at the Hatfield School, until the site was converted to the Central Resources Library in 1993. His work, Ginger Cat with Head of Apollo, was first displayed there. The picture was later moved to Welwyn Garden City Central Library where it remains. McDowell lived in Essendon until his death in 2011.
