NotesHenry James Townsend was a British surgeon, artist, etcher and engraver. He largely known for for his engravings and his paintings of scenes from British literature - in this case a scene from Edmond Spenser's The Fairy Queen. In the scene, the sleeping prince is visited by a vision of Gloriana, a poetic evocation of Elizabeth I.
