NotesZack Wirsum was born in Chicago in 1979 and currently lives and works in Chicago. He received his BFA in painting at The School of the Art Institute in 2002 and also attended Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. As the son of Lori Gunn and the late Karl Wirsum, Zack continues the tradition of important Chicago artists with his unique painting style.
Wirsum's work is characterized by a "visual vocabulary of fluid tangled structures" inspired by urban terrain—such as power lines, grid systems, and construction—which he re-contextualizes into imagined landscapes.
Beyond his studio practice, Wirsum is a significant figure in the art market. He serves as the Senior Vice President and Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Freeman’s Hindman. He is the son of the late legendary Chicago Imagist artist Karl Wirsum and artist Lori Gunn Wirsum.
