Notes1.
Marc Antoine Squarciafichi, a.k.a. Marcestel, was a French artist based in Japan for over fifty years. Mastering multiple painting and sculptural techniques, he illustrated the major events of the Japanese Mythology. He was recognized and awarded by the Shinto order and the Japanese culture minister.
2.
Marcestel is best known for his large-scale oil paintings and his extensive donations of mythological art to major Japanese shrines. While he historically preferred oil on canvas or traditional Japanese papers, his exploration of diverse substrates and sculptural mediums involved highly tactile, earth-based materials such as marble. In this work, Marcestel incorporates the natural patterns in the stone to create the background of the composition.
