NotesBoris Kolesnik was born in Vilshany, Kharkov region, Ukraine, on May 16, 1927.

He studied at the Kharkov Art College 1944 – 1949 and was accepted in to the Kharkov Art Institute in 1950. After graduating from the Institute in 1955, he remained in Kharkov as a rising Soviet artist. A member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, Kolesnik first exhibited in 1951.

His paintings reflect a personal pride in the people and geography of Ukraine. Kolesnik was a master at capturing the effect of sunlight on his subjects and using bright colors – thus giving his paintings a sense of warmth and overall cheerfulness. While his works did conform to the rules of Soviet Socialist Realism, the depth of Kolesnik’s Ukrainian pride and nationalism was undeniable. Kolesnik participated in shows throughout Ukraine and the former Soviet Union.

Kolesnik exhibited internationally in France and Italy, as well as in Japan on eight separate occasions. In addition to numerous worldwide private collections, his works can be found in museums in Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, and Tokyo. His paintings are also in the permanent collections of the Fleischer Museum of Scottsdale, Arizona and the Pearson Art Foundation of Iowa.

The Union artist was an Honored Artist of Ukraine and Honored Artist of the USSR. During his last years, Kolesnik lived and painted in Kharkov and was a senior professor at the Kharkov Institute of Art. He is listed in Matthew Bown's, A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters.
