NotesThis painting is a fragment of a larger canvas painted ca. 1829-30 by an unknown American artist. The image was inspired by the recent archeological discoveries at Pompeii. A variant of this image was found on the walls of the villa of a wealthy Roman citizen excavated at Pompeii in 1829. The news of the discovery traveled quickly to the Colonies and rapidly became the fashion for rich families to decorate their homes.
