NotesJon Corbino came to the United States with his parents at the age of eight. He first attended the Ethnical Culture School, New York, and then enrolled in the Art Students League with George Luks. His first one man exhibition of art took place in 1927 at Oberlin College. After that time, Jon Corbino's paintings, drawings and lithographs were exhibited throughout the United States in many major institutions and galleries. Jon Corbino was a full member of the prestigious National Academy of Design, the Lotus Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Audubon Artists. He also received a number of major honours including the first grant awarded to a visual artist from the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1941) and two Fellowships from the Guggenheim Institute.
Jon Corbino's art is today included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Academy of Design, Washington, IBM and the Chicago Institute of Art. The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco owns an impression of "Escaped Bull".
Jon Corbino's art often drew upon the horse as a powerful symbol. He was also, unlike most American artists of the period, found inspiration not in current movements but in the art of the old masters, most notably, Gericault, Delacroix and Goya. Like these masters, he brought a draftsmanship of richness and a psychological intensity to his art. Escaped Bull like many other works by Jon Corbino is a twentieth century masterpiece.
