Description

Unfinished, unsigned Venetian Ex Voto painting before a religious image was painted within the moon rendering at upper left. The title refers to the type of Venetian boat shown foundering in a storm. This ex Voto painting would have been commissioned by the survivors of the event in gratitude of their survival.

ProvenancePrivate collection, New York

NotesAn ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or a divinity, given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. The term is usually restricted to Christian examples. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. This painting was probably created in gratitude by the survivor(s) of the sinking of this fishing boat in the Venetian lagoon.
