Etching after Francis Cleyn (Ger., 1582-1658), with etched credits reading “Fran. Cleyn inv.: W. Hollar fec: Londini, 1852” in the plate at lower right, with “AE.7.l.550” also etched in the plate, printed on antique laid paper. With engraved banner below the image reading: to “To Coll. NotesWenceslaus Hollar was a prolific and accomplished Bohemian graphic artist of the 17th century, who spent much of his life in England. He is known to German speakers as Wenzel Hollar; and to Czech speakers as Václav Hollar Czech: [ˈvaːtslav ˈɦolar]. He is particularly noted for his engravings and etchings. He was born in Prague, died in London, and was buried at St Margaret's Church, Westminster.
